Monday, June 30th, 2008 Massive 3-alarm fire destroys 36 apartment units near I-465 and Crawfordsville Road Wayne Township units were dispatched to assist on a 3-alarm apartment fire at the International Village apartments in Speedway, Indiana this afternoon. Fire broke out just before 1530hrs and quickly spread with 20+ mph winds. 3 buildings containing 36 apartment units have been completely destroyed. There were a few slight firefighter injuries, however nothing was reported to be serious. Remarkably, no civilians were reported to be injured in this fire. (Top two photos below are courtesy of indystar.com. The bottom 2 are courtesy wthr.com) The three buildings highlighted in the picture below, top left, were the buildings that completely burned. The cause of this fire remains under investigation.
Tuesday, June 25th, 2008 Fiery chain reaction crash closes major Interstate for nearly 12 hours, 3 transported to area hospitals An early morning crash on northbound I-465 near Washington Street in Wayne Township sent three people to the hospital and closed all lanes of the Interstate for several hours. Around 0230 a pickup truck was rear-ended by a semi. The semi caught fire, jack-knifed and slammed into the fuel tanks of another semi, catching it on fire. The second semi then crashed into a third semi. The heavy fire conditions destroyed the vehicles and the asphalt on the roadway. No hazardous materials other than fuel were involved in the accident. Two lanes of the Interstate are going to have to be ground down and repaved before they can be reopened. Officials hope to have the lanes rebuilt by Wednesday morning. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
Friday, June 20th, 2008 Caller reports multiple explosions in the 100 block of Fenster Drive Engine #84, Engine #85, Ladder #84, Ladder #82, Avon Engine #142, and Avon Battalion #14 were dispatched to a possible garage fire in the 100 block of Fenster Drive. Caller reported hearing multiple explosions. Engine #84 arrived on scene to find an involved garage fire. Medic #84 and TSU #83 were dispatched as working fire units. Ladder #84 searched the residence quickly and found no one inside. Engine #84 was able to knock down the fire quickly and the fire was marked out within 10 minutes of arrival. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and it appeared that the explosions knocked the house off its foundation.
Thursday, June 19th, 2008 Units respond to PI with possible entrapment Engine #81, Ladder #82, Engine #82, Medic #81, Medic #83, and Battalion #8 arrived on scene at Lynhurst Drive and Raymond Street to find a five car crash with multiple patients. After assessing the scene there was no entrapment found although 2 civilians were transported to the hospital and 2 others suffered minor injures and were released at the scene.
Thursday, June 19th, 2008 Units respond to report of a residence fire Engine #81, Engine #82, Ladder #82, Medic Aerial #774, and Battalion #8 were dispatched to the 2500 block of south Lockburn Street on the report of a residence fire. As Engine #81 was approaching the scene they observed a small amount of smoke coming from the rear of the residence. When arriving on the scene the crew observed smoke darkened windows and quickly marked it a working fire. Medic #81 and TSU#83 were dispatched as working fire units. When Engine #81 made entry into the residence smoke was from floor to ceiling. The fire was found in the kitchen and was quickly contained. Ladder #82 did a quick search as there were occupants in the residence at the time the fire started. They found no victims. After some overhaul and investigating all crews returned to service. *This residence had NO working smoke detectors and there were people inside at the time of the fire. Had they been asleep this fire could have turned very tragic, very quickly. Please make sure your place of residence has working smoke detectors!
Monday, June 16th, 2008 Project Lifesaver teams deployed for missing teenager Task force 84, consisting of Ladder #84, Engine #84, Car 806 and Task Force 29, consisting of IFD Tac #29, Engine #29, Ladder #29, Light Wagon #29, TSU #29, Engine #5, and several staff cars responded to the 700 block of West 10th Street on the report of a missing 13 year old. Friday, June 13th, 2008 Fire showing through the roof when first crews arrived The lights and bells rang out at 0542 this morning as crews were dispatched to the 4900 block of West Beecher St. The initial box consisted of Engine #82, Engine #81, Ladder #82, Ladder #84, Battalion #8 and Engine #83 as R.I.T. Engine #82 arrived within 3 minutes to find heavy fire and smoke showing with fire through the roof. Medic #82 and TSU #83 were dispatched as the additional working fire companies. The fire was marked under control at 0610 and all crews had cleaned up and were back on station by 0826.
Saturday, June 7th, 2008 More storms and heavy rains pummel the area As heavy rain fell over central Indiana Saturday, Marion county and surrounding counties dealt with anywhere from 3 to 10+ inches of rain in a matter of hours. Several of the county's water rescue teams were activated to assist stranded motorists and people stranded in their homes. At one time all water rescue teams in the county were in use. Indiana Task Force 1 members along with the National Guard, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Coast Guard were also called in to assist. Wayne Township fire fighters stayed busy with several vehicle crashes and mutual aid runs to other counties. At one time, Wayne units were responding to a crash on eastbound I-74 in western Marion County (pictured below to the left) when Ladder #84 hit in to say that an Indiana State Trooper had just hydroplaned and hit the barrier wall on I-465 near 10th street. Around the same time, Engine #81 and Medic #18 responded to northbound I-465 at Rockville road on an overturned vehicle. (pictured below to the right.) By the time evening rolled around the rains had moved out and the skies cleared as citizens began what is sure to be a lengthy clean-up effort.
Friday, May 30th, 2008 Severe thunderstorms sweep area during the night Severe thunderstorms with confirmed tornadoes swept through Marion and surrounding counties. Wayne Township units spent most of the overnight hours assisting other agencies, mainly in Hendricks County, with numerous storm related runs. The storms uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, structures collapsed, and lighting started residence fires. An EF2 tornado touched down on the east side of Indianapolis destroying units in an apartment complex. Over 18 injuries were reported and thousands are still without power as of this writing (06/01/08).
Thursday, May 29th, 2008 Report of a residence fire Wayne Township units and Decatur Township units were dispatched to a possible residence fire in the 4500 block of west Gadsden St. Upon arrival Engine #81 marked light smoke showing and a short time later marked it a working residence fire. This was the same residence that burned on May 23rd, 2008. Crews visualized fire on the exterior of the west side of the residence and within a couple minutes fire broke through a gable vent in the attic area. The residence was boarded up and crews had to force entry in order to knock down the fire on the inside. No injuries were reported.
Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 Heavy smoke and fire showing upon arrival, Multiple calls.
The bells woke crews up early this morning at 0142hrs dispatching Engine #81, Ladder #82, Medic Engine #774, Medic Engine #771, Aerial #771, Ambulance #774 and Engine #772 on a possible apartment fire in the 4500 block of west Troy Avenue. While enroute dispatch marked it a working fire due to multiple calls adding IFD Ladder #19, Ambulance #771, and Car 701 to the run. Medic Engine #774 arrived on scene and reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the apartment building. The night sky was glowing from the flames and heavy smoke as other units began to arrive. While trying to make sure everyone was out of all of the apartment units, fire crews began to attack the extremely fast growing fire. A second alarm was called for adding Engine #882, TSU #883, Medic Engine #664, IFD Engine #19, Aerial #661, Battalion #8, and RSU #1. All second alarm companies were utilized in an attempt to extinguish the fire. The fire was finally marked out at 0412hrs and all units were back in service around 0500hrs. No civilian injuries were reported.
Friday, May 23rd, 2008 Report of a residence fire Wayne township units respnded to the 4500 block of west Gadsden St. on a possible residence fire. Engine #81 marked on scene with heavy smoke and fire showing. Engine #81 made a quick attack on the fire while Ladder #82 did a search for victims. Other units from Wayne and Decatur townships assisted. No injuries were reported.
Wednesday, April 9th, 2008 Heavy smoke and fire showing upon arrival. Multiple calls. An early morning fire destroy's a single story residence on south Collier Street in Mars Hill. Residents of the occupancy were at home at the time of the fire and were able to escape without injury.
