For Ted Moore, a Wayne Township firefighter, ECMO was his only shot at surviving a bout with COVID-19.
The day before Thanksgiving of 2020 Moore developed COVID symptoms. His wife, who is a nurse, monitored his oxygen levels at home. When his oxygen dipped to 69% — with a healthy level being 95% or above — his wife insisted he head to the hospital. Within a few hours of arriving at IU Health Methodist on Nov. 30, he was intubated and the next day he was placed on ECMO.
